‘Kiss on the hill while the sun appears. Love only each other for all your years.’

JACK AND JILL

A Trans-Atlantic collaboration with poet Thomas Sharp on his folk-horror teen-romance poem that will make you very sad about hills.

Barbaric Yawp Workshop designed and crafted masks inspired by the characters in the poem, and collaborated with Thomas Sharp on 5 cover designs featuring the masks and photographed by Leticia Valdez Fotografia.

Jack is a three-quarter mask, and calls to mind a lover from the Italian Commedia dell Arte. But, there's something dark in Jack's sullen eyes. This mask is young but world-weary, beautiful but brutish. Poor Jack.

Micheal Mealy is a full-face mask, and the only child Barbaric Yawp Workshop has thought about throwing away. The folk legend himself, the murderer who went laughing to the gallows, 'kicking with gleefear'. They say that hill is haunted. This mask may be too. We at Barbaric Yawp Workshop, in our bleeding-heart weakness could not cast away this mask, despite how hideous it is. Besides, no one would want to buy it anyway... would they?

Jill is a full face mask in shades of blue, inspired by Tudor era funeral effigies and Noh Theater Onnamen masks. Hang on a face or wall, Jill invites to you to look deeper.

This mask is The Wizard himself. In some traditions it is unwise to depict the eyes of a supernatural being, so heeding ancestral warnings, we've made each of his five eyes from glass mirrors laid in the sacred geometry of the Kabbalah Tree of Life.

Here is the full troupe: Poor Jack, Jill in shades of blue, The Wizard Himself, and the old cursed Michael Mealy. Two of this world and two from another. Each mask is a door, and these four will take you to very different places. Collect them all.
